- 1:
- In 3-way bets, it symbolises a home win. It is often used as a shorthand on betting slips.
- 2:
- Stands for an away win in a classic 3-way bet.
- X:
- Denotes a draw (remis) in a match in 3-way betting.
- 2-way bet:
- Betting format with only two possible outcomes (e.g., win or loss). Typical in tennis or basketball.
- 3-way bet:
- Standard bet in sports like football, where home win, draw, or away win is possible.
A
- Accumulator
- English term for a combination bet. Several individual tips are combined into one betting slip, where all must be correct to win.
- Hedging
- Betting strategy where the risk of losses is limited by placing counter-bets, using specific bet types, or cashing out.
- Antepost bet
- Long-term bet placed well before an event begins – e.g., on the winner of a tournament before the first matchday.
- Asian Handicap
- Form of handicap betting where balanced odds are created through virtual advantages or disadvantages. Draws are excluded, which improves risk hedging.
- Asian Over
- Subcategory of Asian total bets. Wagers that more than a certain number of goals will be scored. Often offered in quarter steps like Over 2.25, which can lead to half-refunds.
- Asian Under
- Counterpart to Asian Over: You bet that fewer than a certain number of goals will be scored here – also often given in quarter values.
- Arbitrage Bet
- Betting strategy where you bet on all possible outcomes of an event by taking advantage of different odds from multiple bookmakers – with a guaranteed profit, regardless of the outcome.
- Underdog
- Participant given very little chance by the bookmaker. Underdog bets promise high odds, but also carry a higher risk of loss.
B
- Back Bet
- A bet on a specific event happening – the classic form of betting as usual with bookmakers. The opposite is a lay bet.
- Banker Tip
- A tip that is considered to have particularly high chances of winning and is often thought of as "safe". Frequently used in accumulator or system bets.
- Bet Builder
- A feature offered by many bookies that lets you combine multiple bets from a single match – such as the score, goalscorer, and number of cards.
- Betting Exchange
- A betting platform where users bet directly against each other. You can both back and lay bets without a traditional bookie being involved.
- Betting Odds
- The English term for odds – they reflect the probability calculated by the bookie for an outcome to happen and determine the potential payout.
- Bonus terms and conditions
- Requirements tied to the withdrawal of a bonus or winnings made from it – such as minimum odds or a wagering requirement.
- Bookie
- A sports betting provider that sets odds, accepts bets, and settles them. Bookies make their profit through margins built into the odds.
- Bwin
- Well-known international bookmaker with roots in Austria. Active as a brand in German-speaking countries since the early 2000s.
C
- Cash-Out
- Feature offered by many bookmakers that allows you to cash out a running bet early – either to secure a profit or limit a loss.
- Cashout Value
- The current amount a bookmaker offers for a running bet as part of a cash-out. It depends on the course of the game and the remaining probability of the tip.
- Combo Bet
- A combination bet – several single bets are combined into one betting slip. The slip only wins if all tips are correct.
- Corner Bet
- Bet on corner kicks, e.g., on the number of corners in the game, which team gets more corners, or whether a certain number of corners will be exceeded or not.
- Correct Score
- Bet on the exact result of a game, e.g., 2:1 or 0:0. This bet has particularly high odds, but also a correspondingly high risk.
- Correct Score Bet
- Alternative term for "Correct Score". Often used on German-language betting sites, but means the exact same thing.
D
- Decimal Odds
- Decimal odds – a common format for displaying betting odds in Europe. Example: Odds of 2.50 mean you get back 2.5 times your stake.
- Double Chance
- Betting type where two out of three possible match outcomes are covered at the same time – e.g. 1X, X2 or 12. This option reduces risk, but also lowers the odds.
- Draw No Bet
- A bet on a team where a draw results in your stake being refunded. Often used as a hedging strategy.
- Treble
- System bet consisting of three selections played in a single treble accumulator. Requirement to win: All three selections must be correct.
E
- Deposit bonus
- Bonus offer from a bookmaker where a certain percentage of the first deposit is credited as extra – e.g. 100% up to £100.
- single bet
- Bet on a single event. Your winnings are simply your stake multiplied by the odds. The simplest and lowest-risk type of bet.
- Stake
- The amount a player places on a bet. The potential payout is calculated by multiplying the stake by the odds.
- Correct Score Bet
- A bet on the exact final score of a match – also see Correct Score. Especially popular in football games.
- Opening Odds
- The initial odds a bookmaker releases for an event. These can change right up until kick-off due to market shifts or new information.
F
- Favourite
- The competitor or team given the best chance of winning by the bookmaker. Odds for favourites are generally lower.
- Fibonacci System
- A betting system where stakes are increased according to the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 ...). The goal is to get back into profit after a losing streak by landing a win.
- Flat Betting
- Conservative betting strategy where every stake is the same size – regardless of previous wins or losses. Helps keep your bankroll steady.
- Free bet
- Free bet often offered as part of promotions or as a bonus. Usually, if you win, only the net winnings are paid out without the stake.
- Unlocking thresholds
- Limits or conditions that unlock or activate a bonus or bet – e.g. a certain wagering requirement or odds limit.
G
- Outright winner bet
- Long-term bet where you wager on the winner of a tournament or a season – e.g. Champions League winner or Formula 1 World Champion.
- Payout
- The amount paid out if a bet wins. Calculation: Stake × Odds. For bonus bets, the payout may vary.
- Odds
- Odds value that indicates the potential gross return – meaning including the stake. The lower the odds, the more likely the event.
- State Treaty on Gambling
- Legal basis for online gambling in Germany. Since July 2021, it has regulated the licensing of sports betting providers, among other things.
- Base odds
- The odds initially calculated by a bookmaker before any market impact. The basis for adjustments driven by supply and demand.
H
- Half-time/Full-time bet
- An accumulator bet where you have to correctly predict the result at both half-time and the end of the match – e.g. 1/X or X/2. There are nine possible combinations.
- Handicap bet
- A type of bet where a team starts with a fictional advantage or deficit. Popular for making one-sided matches more appealing through balanced odds.
- Head-to-head
- A comparison of two participants independently of the overall field – e.g. in motorsport or ski racing: whoever finishes better wins.
- Home advantage
- The observation that teams are often more successful at home. Bookmakers factor this into their odds calculations.
- Highest odds
- Maximum odds limit that applies to certain bonus promos or accumulator bets. Higher odds might not be counted beyond this limit.
I
- In-play bet
- A bet placed while the match is underway. The odds change dynamically based on how the game unfolds.
- Inside tip
- A tip based on internal or non-public info, like injuries, lineups, or team morale. Such tips carry risks, including legal ones.
- Insider bets
- Bets placed using insider information. In many countries, such bets are illegal or can lead to account suspension.
- iOS app
- A betting provider's mobile app for Apple devices. These apps often feature the exact same functions as the web version.
J
- Jackpot
- A massive prize amount usually paid out on special bets or betting pools. Jackpots can grow over a long time until someone wins them.
- Juice
- US term for the bookie's profit margin. Also known as "vig" or "vigorish". It's the built-in profit share of the provider in a price.
K
- accumulator bet
- Bet type where multiple single picks are combined on one bet slip. The total return is calculated by multiplying all prices together - but only if 100% of predictions are correct.
- Account verification
- Process to check identity with betting providers, where e.g. ID documents or proof of address need to be uploaded. Required for withdrawals.
- Kelly Criterion
- Mathematical approach to calculate the optimal stake for value bets. The goal is to maximise bankroll growth in the long run while limiting losses.
- Accumulator bonus
- Extra winnings paid out on successful accumulator bets with multiple selections. The more selections, the higher the bonus usually is.
L
- Outright bet
- Bet on an outcome that won't be decided until weeks or months later – e.g. who will win the league title or finish as top scorer. These bets tie up capital long-term.
- Lay bet
- A type of bet where you wager against a specific event happening. Only possible on betting exchanges. You essentially take on the role of the bookie.
- In-play bet
- A bet placed while a match is ongoing. The odds update dynamically based on the action on the pitch or court. Especially popular for football and tennis.
- Limit
- A cap on stakes or winnings set by a bookmaker. Can be applied across the board or individually – such as for successful punters.
- Licence
- Official authorisation a bookmaker needs to offer sports betting legally. In Germany, this is regulated by the State Treaty on Gambling.
M
- Martingale system
- Progressive betting system where the stake is doubled after every lost bet to cover all previous losses with the first win. Very high-risk during long losing streaks.
- Maximum win
- Upper limit for the potential winnings of a bet, as set by the bookmaker. Can vary per bet, day, or sport.
- Minimum stake
- The smallest amount that must be staked for a bet with a bookmaker. Often between £0.10 and £1.
- Money Management
- Systematic management of the betting bankroll with the aim of being successful in the long term. Includes stake management and risk control, among other things.
- Mobile bet
- Bets placed via smartphone or tablet. Usually possible via app or a mobile-optimised website.
N
- Injury time bet
- Bet on events taking place specifically during injury time – e.g. a goal or a card. Only offered by a few bookmakers.
- New customer bonus
- Welcome offer for new players, usually in the form of a deposit bonus or a risk-free bet. Subject to bonus conditions such as turnover requirements or minimum odds.
- Null odds
- Odds of exactly 1.00 where no profit is made. Can pop up in special cases, like if an event gets called off and the bet is voided.
O
- Oddset
- Brand for state-licensed sports betting in Germany, run by the state lottery companies. Well known for fixed odds and conservative betting options.
- Over/Under
- Betting type where you bet on whether a specific number of goals or points will be exceeded or not – e.g. "Over 2.5 goals" means at least three goals in the match.
- Over 1.5/2.5/3.5
- Typical over bets where a minimum number of goals must be scored in the game. The number after the term represents the relevant goal line.
- Outright bet
- Long-term bet on the overall winner of a tournament or league. Synonym for tournament winner bet or ante-post bet.
P
- Payout-Ratio
- The bookmaker's percentage payout rate indicating how much of the stakes is returned to players in the long run. Values over 90% are considered player-friendly.
- Place Bet
- A bet type where a participant does not necessarily have to win, but it is enough if they finish in the top X – e.g. top 3 in a horse race.
- Progressive Bet
- A strategy in which the stake amount is changed according to a specific pattern – usually you increase it after losses to recover losses (progression).
- Push
- A situation where a bet is settled at odds of 1.00 and the stake is fully refunded – such as a tie in Draw No Bet or hitting the exact goal count in Over/Under.
Q
- Odds
- A numerical expression for the probability of an event. The higher the odds, the less likely the tip – but the greater the potential win.
- Odds Boost
- Temporarily boosted odds for selected bets, usually as part of promotions. It offers higher returns than usual, but is often capped or has conditions attached.
- Odds comparison
- Comparing betting odds from different bookies to find the best value for a specific bet. Important for long-term profit.
R
- Correct score bet
- A bet on the exact final score of a match – for example 2:1 or 0:0. Very popular with footy fans because of the high odds, but tough to predict.
- Rollover
- Wagering requirement for bonus offers. Before you can withdraw, the bonus amount has to be played through (e.g. 5 times) at a certain minimum odds.
- Money back bet
- A bet where your stake is fully refunded under certain conditions – e.g. on a draw. Often part of promos.
- Longshot odds
- Odds on an event with a very low chance of happening, usually with extra high potential returns. Popular for underdog bets.
S
- Stake
- Term for the stake. The amount a player risks on a bet. Can be used constantly or variably depending on the strategy.
- Surebet
- Betting option where you guarantee a profit by betting on all possible outcomes of an event with different bookmakers thanks to varying odds. Can only be used with very quick reactions.
- System bet
- Combination of several tips in a betting system where not all tips have to be correct to still make a profit. Examples: 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4.
- Match analysis
- Detailed evaluation of a sporting event in preparation for a bet – including form, statistics, line-ups, motivation, etc.
- Swedish odds
- Outdated term for extremely low odds – e.g. 1.01 or 1.05. These indicate an almost certain event, but offer hardly any profit.
T
- Tip
- Concrete prediction of an outcome – e.g. "Team A wins". Tips are often based on statistics, gut feeling, or expert opinion.
- Bet slip
- Document or digital proof that collects all the bets placed by a player. Includes stake, odds, and potential winnings.
- Toto
- Sports competition where the player bets on a fixed number of matches (e.g., 13 games). The goal is to predict as many results as possible correctly. Known through state providers like Lotto.
- Hit rate
- Percentage of successful bets out of the total number of all placed bets. Used to evaluate betting quality.
- Trixie
- System bet with three selections, consisting of a total of four bets: three doubles and one treble. At least two correct bets guarantee a payout.
U
- Under
- Bet on an event with fewer than a certain number of goals or points. For example, 'Under 2.5' means a maximum of two goals can be scored.
- Underdog
- Term for an outsider who is given only a small chance of winning by bookmakers. The odds are correspondingly high.
- Turnover requirement
- Condition that must be met during bonus promotions before a withdrawal is possible. Typical example: A bonus might need to be wagered e.g. 5× at a minimum odds of 1.80.
- Draw
- Game outcome where both teams have scored the same number of goals or points. Referred to as "X" in 3-way bets.
V
- Value Bet
- Bet where the odds offered are higher than the actual probability of the event occurring. The foundation of many professional betting strategies.
- Loss progression
- Strategy where stakes are increased after every lost bet with the goal of recovering losses through the next win. Examples include the Martingale or Fibonacci systems.
- Verification process
- Mandatory step at legal bookmakers where a player must prove their identity and residential address. Withdrawals are usually not possible without this step.
W
- Betting exchange
- Platform where players place bets against each other without a traditional bookmaker. Participants can bet both on and against an event (back and lay).
- Betting odds
- Core element of any bet - indicates how high the payout will be if successful. It is set by the bookmaker based on probability and margin.
- Betting tax
- Legally mandated 5% tax on sports betting in Germany. Is deducted either from the stake or the gross winnings, depending on the provider.
- Betting limit
- Maximum allowed stake or payout with a bookmaker. Used to limit risk - especially in the case of suspicious bettors or system players.
- Bet slip
- Receipt (physical or digital) summarizing all picks, stakes, and odds of a bet. Basis for the payout of winnings.
X
- X
- Abbreviation for a draw in a traditional 3-way bet. Used on betting slips as a neutral outcome between home win (1) and away win (2).
Y
- Yankee
- System bet with four selections, combined into a total of eleven bets: six doubles, four trebles, and one four-fold. A win is possible with just two correct predictions.
Z
- Time Bets
- A type of bet placed on events within a specific time window of a game – e.g., a goal between the 1st and 15th minute.
- Two-Way Bet
- A bet with only two possible outcomes – e.g., win or loss. Typical for sports without draws like tennis or basketball.
- Scorecast Bet
- A bet on the exact score at a specific point in time, for example, at half-time or after the first quarter.
