- 1:
- Symbolizes the home win in 3-way bets. Often used as a shorthand on betting slips.
- 2:
- Stands for the away win in a classic 3-way bet.
- X:
- Denotes the draw in a match in 3-way bets.
- 2-Way Bet:
- Bet type with only two possible outcomes (e.g. win or loss). Typical in tennis or basketball.
- 3-Way Bet:
- Standard bet in sports like football, where a home win, draw, or away win is possible.
A
- Accumulator
- English term for combo bet. Several individual picks are combined into one betting slip, and all of them must be correct to win.
- Hedging
- Betting strategy in which counter-bets, certain bet types, or cash-out are used to try to limit the risk of losses.
- Antepost Bet
- Long-term bet placed well before the start of an event – e.g. on the winner of a tournament before the first matchday.
- Asian Handicap
- Form of handicap bet in which virtual advantages or disadvantages are used to create balanced chances. Draws are excluded, which improves risk hedging.
- Asian Over
- Part of the Asian total bets. Bets on more than a certain number of goals being scored. Often offered in quarter increments such as Over 2.25, which can lead to half refunds.
- Asian Under
- Counterpart to Asian Over: here you bet that fewer than a certain number of goals will be scored – also often given in quarter values.
- Arbitrage Bet
- Betting strategy in which, by using different odds from several bookmakers, bets are placed on all possible outcomes of an event – with a guaranteed profit regardless of the outcome.
- Underdog
- Participant given only a slim chance by the bookmaker. Underdog bets promise high odds but also carry a higher risk of loss.
B
- Back Bet
- Bet on a specific event occurring – the classic bet type as offered by bookmakers. The opposite is a lay bet.
- Banker Tip
- A tip considered to have especially high chances of winning and often regarded as “safe”. Frequently part of combo or system bets.
- Bet Builder
- Feature offered by many bookmakers that allows you to combine several bets from a single match – e.g. result, goalscorer, and number of cards.
- Betting Exchange
- Betting exchange where users bet directly against each other. You can both accept bets (back) and offer them (lay), without a classic bookmaker being involved.
- Betting Odds
- English term for odds – they reflect the probability of an outcome as calculated by the bookmaker and determine the possible winnings.
- Bonus Terms
- Requirements attached to the payout of a bonus or winnings achieved with it – such as a minimum odds requirement or a multiple wagering requirement.
- Bookmaker
- Sports bookmaker that sets odds, accepts bets, and settles them. Bookmakers generate their profit through margins built into the odds.
- Bwin
- Well-known international bookmaker with roots in Austria. Active as a brand in German-speaking countries since the early 2000s.
C
- Cash-Out
- Feature offered by many bookmakers that lets you settle an ongoing bet early – either to lock in winnings or limit losses.
- Cash-Out Value
- The current amount a bookmaker offers for an ongoing bet as part of a cash-out. It’s based on how the match is progressing and the remaining probability of the pick.
- Combo Bet
- A combination bet – several individual bets are combined into one betting slip. The slip only wins if all picks are correct.
- Corner Bet
- Bet on corner kicks, e.g. on the number of corners in the match, which team gets more corners, or whether a certain number of corners is over- or undershot.
- Correct Score
- Bet on the exact result of a match, e.g. 2:1 or 0:0. This bet has especially high odds, but also a correspondingly high risk.
- Correct Score Bet
- Alternative term for “Correct Score”. Often used on German-language betting portals, but means the same thing.
D
- Decimal Odds
- Decimal odds – common way of displaying betting odds in Europe. Example: odds of 2.50 mean you get back 2.5 times your stake.
- Double Chance
- Bet type in which two of three possible match outcomes are covered simultaneously – e.g. 1X, X2, or 12. This option reduces the risk, but also the odds.
- Draw No Bet
- Bet on a team where a draw results in your stake being refunded. Often used as a hedging strategy.
- Treble (3-Fold System)
- System bet consisting of three picks, played as a single three-way combination. Requirement for a payout: all three picks must be correct.
E
- Deposit Bonus
- Bonus offer from a bookmaker in which a certain percentage of the first deposit is credited additionally – e.g. 100% up to €100.
- Single Bet
- Bet on a single event. The winnings result directly from stake times odds. The simplest and lowest-risk bet type.
- Stake
- The amount a player places on a bet. The possible winnings are calculated as stake multiplied by odds.
- Result Bet
- Bet on the exact final result of a match – see also Correct Score. Especially popular in football matches.
- Opening Odds
- The first odds a bookmaker publishes for an event. They can change due to market movements or information up until kickoff.
F
- Favorite
- Participant or team given the best chances of winning according to the bookmaker. Odds for favorites are typically lower.
- Fibonacci System
- Betting system in which stakes are increased according to the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 …). The goal is to return to profit after a losing streak through a single win.
- Flat Betting
- Conservative betting strategy in which every stake is the same size – regardless of previous wins or losses. Helps keep the bankroll stable.
- Freebet
- Free bet often offered as part of promotions or as a bonus. Usually only the net winnings, not the stake, are paid out on a win.
- Unlock Thresholds
- Limits or conditions from which a bonus or bet is unlocked or becomes active – e.g. a certain wagering amount or an odds limit.
G
- Outright Winner Bet
- Long-term bet in which you predict the winner of a tournament or a season – e.g. Champions League winner or Formula 1 world champion.
- Winnings
- The amount paid out on a successful bet. Calculation: stake × odds. With bonus bets, the payout can vary.
- Winning Odds
- Odds value indicating the possible gross winnings – i.e. including the stake. The lower the odds, the more likely the event.
- Interstate Gambling Treaty
- Legal basis for legal online gambling in Germany. Since July 2021, it regulates, among other things, the licensing of sports bookmakers.
- Base Odds
- The originally calculated odds of a bookmaker before any market influence. Basis for adjustments due to supply and demand.
H
- Halftime/Fulltime Bet
- Combo bet in which both the halftime result and the final result must be correctly predicted – e.g. 1/X or X/2. There are nine possible combinations.
- Handicap Bet
- Bet type in which a team starts with a fictitious lead or deficit. Popular for making one-sided matches more attractive through balanced odds.
- Head-to-Head
- Comparison of two participants independent of the overall field – e.g. in motorsport or ski racing: whichever of the two finishes better wins.
- Home Advantage
- Observation that teams are often more successful at home. Bookmakers factor this into their odds calculations.
- Maximum Odds
- Upper limit on the odds that apply to certain bonus promotions or combo bets. Higher odds may then no longer be taken into account.
I
- In-Play Bet
- Bet placed while a match is in progress. The odds change dynamically depending on how the match unfolds.
- Inside Tip
- Tip based on internal or non-public information, such as injuries, lineups, or motivation levels. Such tips carry risks, including legal ones.
- Insider Betting
- Bets placed using insider information. In many countries, such bets are banned or can lead to account suspension.
- iOS App
- Mobile app from a bookmaker for Apple devices. These apps often offer the same functionality as the web version.
J
- Jackpot
- Large prize amount, usually paid out on special bets or betting pools. Jackpots can grow over a long period until they are won.
- Juice
- US term for the bookmaker’s margin. Also known as “vig” or “vigorish”. It refers to the provider’s built-in profit share within the odds.
K
- Combo Bet (Accumulator)
- Bet type in which several individual picks are combined on one betting slip. The total winnings result from multiplying all the odds together – but only with 100% correct predictions.
- Account Verification
- Process for verifying identity at bookmakers, in which, for example, ID documents or proof of address must be uploaded. A requirement for withdrawals.
- Kelly Formula
- Mathematical approach for calculating the optimal stake for value bets. The goal is to maximize long-term bankroll growth while limiting losses.
- Combo Bonus
- Additional winnings paid out on successful combo bets with multiple picks. The more selections, the higher the bonus usually is.
L
- Long-Term Bet
- Bet on a result that is only determined after weeks or months – e.g. who becomes German champion or top goalscorer. These bets tie up capital long-term.
- Lay Bet
- Bet type in which you bet against a specific event occurring. Only possible on betting exchanges. You take on the role of the bookmaker.
- Live Bet
- Bet placed during an ongoing match. The odds are dynamically adjusted to match events. Especially popular in football and tennis.
- Limit
- Limit on the stake or winnings at a bookmaker. Can be set as a blanket rule or individually – for example, for successful players.
- License
- Official permit a bookmaker needs in order to legally offer sports betting. Regulated in Germany by the Interstate Gambling Treaty.
M
- Martingale System
- Progressive betting system in which the stake is doubled after every lost bet, so that the first win covers all previous losses. Very high risk during long losing streaks.
- Maximum Winnings
- Upper limit on the possible winnings for a bet, as set by the bookmaker. Can vary by bet, day, or sport.
- Minimum Stake
- The smallest amount that must be wagered on a bet at a bookmaker. Often between €0.10 and €1.
- Money Management
- Systematic management of your betting budget with the goal of long-term success. Includes stake control and risk management, among other things.
- Mobile Bet
- Bets placed via smartphone or tablet. Usually possible via app or a mobile-optimized website.
N
- Stoppage Time Bet
- Bet on events that take place specifically in stoppage time – e.g. a goal or a card. Only offered by a few bookmakers.
- New Customer Bonus
- Bonus offer for new players, usually in the form of a deposit bonus or a risk-free bet. Tied to bonus terms such as wagering requirements or minimum odds.
- Zero Odds
- Odds of exactly 1.00, at which no profit is made. Can occur in special cases, such as when an event is cancelled and the bet doesn’t count.
O
- Oddset
- Brand for state-licensed sports betting offerings in Germany, operated by the state lottery companies. Known for fixed odds and conservative betting options.
- Over/Under
- Bet type in which you bet on whether a certain number of goals or points will be exceeded or not reached – e.g. “Over 2.5 goals” means at least three goals in the match.
- Over 1.5/2.5/3.5
- Typical over bets, in which a minimum number of goals must be reached in the match. The number after the term stands for the relevant goal threshold.
- Outright Bet
- Long-term bet on the overall winner of a tournament or league. Synonym for outright winner bet or antepost bet.
P
- Payout Ratio
- The bookmaker’s percentage payout ratio, indicating how much of the stakes flow back to players over the long term. Values above 90% are considered player-friendly.
- Place Bet
- Bet type in which a participant doesn’t necessarily have to win, but it’s enough for them to finish among the top X – e.g. top 3 in a horse race.
- Progressive Bet
- Strategy in which the stake amount is changed according to a certain pattern – usually increased after losses in order to offset them (progression).
- Push
- Situation in which a bet is settled at odds of 1.00 and the stake is fully refunded – for example on a draw with Draw No Bet, or when the exact number of goals set for an Over/Under bet is reached.
Q
- Odds
- Numerical expression of the probability of an event. The higher the odds, the less likely the pick – but the greater the possible winnings.
- Odds Boost
- Temporarily increased odds for selected bets, usually as part of promotions. Offers higher winnings than usual, but is often limited or comes with conditions.
- Odds Comparison
- Comparison of betting odds from different providers with the goal of finding the best value for a particular bet. Important for long-term profitability.
R
- Result Bet
- Bet on the exact final result of a match – for example 2:1 or 0:0. Very popular among football fans due to the high odds, but hard to predict.
- Rollover
- Wagering requirement for bonus offers. Before a withdrawal is possible, the bonus amount must be wagered (e.g. 5 times) at a certain minimum odds.
- Refund Bet
- Bet in which the stake is fully refunded under certain conditions – e.g. in the event of a draw. Often part of promotions.
- Risk Odds
- Odds on an event with a very low probability of occurring, usually with especially high profit potential. Popular for underdog bets.
S
- Stake
- Term for the bet stake. The amount a player risks on a bet. Can be used constantly or variably depending on strategy.
- Surebet
- Betting opportunity in which, by betting on all possible outcomes of an event with different bookmakers, a guaranteed profit is achieved – thanks to differing odds. Only usable with very fast reaction times.
- System Bet
- Combination of several picks in a betting system in which not all picks need to be correct in order to still achieve a profit. Examples: 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4.
- Match Analysis
- Detailed assessment of a sporting event in preparation for a bet – including form, statistics, lineups, motivation, etc.
- Sweden Odds
- Outdated term for extremely low odds – e.g. 1.01 or 1.05. These indicate an almost certain event, but offer hardly any profit.
T
- Tip
- Concrete prediction of a result – e.g. “Team A to win”. Tips are often based on statistics, gut feeling, or expert assessment.
- Betting Slip
- Document or digital record on which all of a player’s placed bets are collected. Contains stake, odds, and possible winnings.
- Toto
- Sports competition in which the player predicts a fixed number of matches (e.g. 13 matches). The goal is to correctly predict as many results as possible. Known through state providers such as Lotto.
- Hit Rate
- Percentage of successful tips out of the total number of bets placed. Used to assess the quality of tips.
- Trixie
- System bet with three selections, consisting of a total of four bets: three doubles and one treble. At least two correct picks guarantee a payout.
U
- Under
- Bet on an event with fewer than a certain number of goals or points. For example: “Under 2.5” means a maximum of two goals may be scored.
- Underdog
- Term for an outsider given only a slim chance of winning according to bookmakers. The odds are correspondingly high.
- Wagering Requirement
- Condition that must be met in bonus promotions before a withdrawal is possible. Typical example: a bonus must be wagered, e.g., 5 times at minimum odds of 1.80.
- Draw
- Match outcome in which both teams score the same number of goals or points. Denoted by “X” in 3-way bets.
V
- Value Bet
- Bet in which the odds offered are higher than they should be based on the actual probability of the event. The basis of many professional betting strategies.
- Loss Progression
- Strategy in which stakes are increased after every lost bet – with the goal of offsetting losses through the next win. Examples include the Martingale or Fibonacci systems.
- Verification Process
- Mandatory step at legal bookmakers in which a player must prove their identity and home address. Withdrawals are usually not possible without this step.
W
- Betting Exchange
- Platform where players place bets against each other, without a classic bookmaker. Participants can bet both for (back) and against (lay) an event.
- Betting Odds
- Central figure for every bet – indicates how much you win in case of success. Set by the bookmaker based on probability and margin.
- Betting Tax
- Tax of 5% on sports betting required by law in Germany. Deducted either from the stake or the gross winnings, depending on the provider.
- Betting Limit
- Maximum allowed stake or winnings at a bookmaker. Used to limit risk – especially for conspicuous bettors or system players.
- Betting Slip
- Record (physical or digital) on which all picks, stakes, and odds of a bet are summarized. The basis for payout of winnings.
X
- X
- Abbreviation for a draw in a classic 3-way bet. Used on betting slips as the neutral result between home win (1) and away win (2).
Y
- Yankee
- System bet with four selections, combined into a total of eleven bets: six doubles, four trebles, and one four-fold combination. A profit is possible with as few as two correct picks.
Z
- Time Bets
- Bet type in which you bet on events within a specific time window of the match – e.g. a goal between the 1st and 15th minute.
- Two-Way Bet
- Bet type with only two possible outcomes – e.g. win or loss. Typical for sports without draws, such as tennis or basketball.
- Interim Score Bet
- Bet on the specific score at a certain point in the match, such as at halftime or after the first quarter of an hour.
